Eat and Drink Florence

As we find Bistros, Trattorias, Cafes and Bars that look interesting to us on other blogs and websites we will document them here.  After the trip, we will review the actual restaurants we went to.

Please click on the restaurant names to check out the original content and full reviews from our blogger friends.  Thx.

FROM AN AMERICAN IN ITALY (one of our favorites). These are just a few that she reviews, and ones that we want to try. Click on the link to her blog above for more reviews and to read her complete reviews (with photos, even).

 Trattoria da Rocco-Sant’Ambrogio Mercato

"You should go to this Florence favorite while in the Sant’Ambrogio area. Sant’ Ambrogio has a large market, much like Mercato Centrale, but less touristy and more authentic. There are produce and clothing vendors on the outside, and meat, seafood, cheese, and other goods inside. Along with these food vendors, there is Rocco’s."

Teatro Bistro

"In the Piazza Strozzi, near the Strozzi Palace, and on the side of the Odeon Movie Theater, there is a small bar/café called Teatro Bistro. There is a terrace outside, and you can enter from the theater, or from outside. There is a lovely appertivo there and it is discounted 1 euro if you have a ticket stub! For 6 euro, (5 with the ticket stub) you get a drink and a wonderful buffet of cheese, pasta, pizza bites, foccacia and olives. You can have “dinner and a show” in one swoop for about 13 euro.'  Appertivo starts at 7:30pm."

Il Contadino

"Thanks to Will and Dani for sharing this incredible find with me! I am a little reluctant to post it here given that the day we went it was so crowded we had to wait on the side walk for 20 minutes! Open only on weekdays for lunch and dinner, this very small trattoria, which is family owned is an incredible value, and incredible food. Il Contadino is located at Via Palazzuolo, 69 50123 Florence, Italy 055 238 2673. They are opened from 12 until 9:40 for lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday."

Sei Divino

"I went to Sei Divino again for an appertivo. Appertivo is the Italian equivalent of Happy Hour, but usually lasts from 7-9 and for the regular price of a drink, you get some type of food with it. I had been here before and had a lovely cheese platter, so was anxious to return. I expect this place will become one of my regular haunts as my new apartment is just a few doors down. There is a nice outside seating area with couches and chairs. As the weather turns bad, I expect this might disappear for the season, but for now it is lovely."

Reginella

"This pizza restaurant is located in the San Lorenzo area next to the Medici Chapel. I found a great deal on Groupon and went there for an evening with a friend for 19 euro. This was a special bargain, but the regular prices are good, and full price for this meal would be around 40 euro. The interior is lovely with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. The service was unusually efficient for Italy! There is also an outside patio, but on this Fall evening it was cold and rainy so we went with the warmth of the inside.
First up, a plate of salami, prosciutto, cheese, fried dough, and a mix of bruschetta! The cost of this is usually 15 euro, and it is a meal in itself! Two pizzas came next, we ordered one Napoli, with mozzarella anchovies and capers, and the other Frutti del mare (seafood) After that meat platter, we were ready for a change! The crust is very thin, and wonderful made in a wood burning oven. Two glasses of wine, and coffee topped off the evening.  I would recommend this place for dinner or lunch after a day of shopping in the San Lorenzo market. Reginella is located at via del Canto dei Nelli, 38R, Florence, Italy."

Piccolo Vinaio

"I have been remiss is not writing about this spot before, but if you need a bottle of wine for enjoying in Piazza Signoria, or the Ponte Vecchio, or some sandwiches to make a quick picnic for the trip to Piazzale Michelangelo, you should definitely stop here for the greatest value in town. Signor Nicco has bottles of red wine for as little as 2 euro, and large fresh sandwiches for only 2.90! I can attest personally to this 2 euro bottle of wine, as I drink 2-3 a week while listening to music in the piazza with friends."

This small “hole in the wall” is located in Piazza di Grano on the back side of The Uffizi on the corner of via di Ninna and via dei Leoni. Signor Nicco serves individual glasses of wine for 1 euro, and all types of other beverages as well. He can open the bottle and provide plastic cups for take away!

SPOTS FOR GELATO:
From La Vita é Bella  (please click on the link to read full reviews. There is much more information on her site)

  1. Gelateria della Passera, Piazza della Passera 15 - Small shop, small selection but always AMAZING. This is hands down our favorite in the city. This piazza also has a few fantastic dining options and is a wonderful place to people watch, so be sure to stop by for those other reasons, too!
  2. Gelateria la Carraia, Piazza Nazario Sauro, 25/r - This is a favorite among a lot of Italians that we know and we agree that the gelato is absolutely delicious!
  3. Gelateria Santa Trinia, Piazza Frescobaldi, 11-12/r - This gelateria is great because they have a lot of fun with their creations and often experiment with combos and flavors you wouldn't normally expect to see in ice cream form...so, be brave and try a unique flavor when you go.
From An American in Italy (her favorite for gelato):
 - La Carraia: near the bridge Carraia (the 2nd bridge west of Ponte Vecchio)
